You see your kitchen at all times of the day; from packing your lunch in the morning to pouring an after-work glass of wine to prepping meals, you spend a lot of time in your kitchen. Upgrading and remodeling your kitchen can be an exciting time; you get to choose what kind of appliances you want, what style of flooring, and change the entire layout if you wish. Customizing and upgrading your kitchen can make you feel like you’ve moved into a brand new home!
Update Your Kitchen Flooring
Your flooring is unique in that it spans the entire area of your home, allowing your floor choice to influence the tone of your entire home directly. Upgrading your flooring to a modern style with a durable material can improve the aesthetics of your home and your property values. For example, Grey flooring ideas are wildly popular among homeowners in 2019, due to their rustic yet modern, sleek look, making grey flooring a versatile choice.
Modernize Your Kitchen Countertops
Your kitchen gets more traffic than possibly any space in your home! From cooking meals to socializing, both your family and your guests spend time in your kitchen. Modernizing your kitchen countertops not only increases your property values, but upgrading to durable materials saves you money in the long run. Many homeowners in 2019 have chosen solid surface kitchen top or beige quartz countertops opting for durability as well as style. While these surfaces may differ in terms of care and cost, the overall idea remains the same: strength and sustainability.
The details of your kitchen tell your story. From the colors and materials, you choose down to the information on the cabinet handles can be customized, creating your unique aesthetic. Consider the following when designing your new kitchen:
- Backsplashes – A unique backsplash can add a bit of flair into your kitchen. Using bright, colorful tiles to offset a kitchen with less natural light, or adding mix-and-match tiles to create a custom design can create a unique, one-of-a-kind look and feel in your kitchen.
- Drawers and Shelves – plywood design is a growing new trend in custom home building, and it is easy to see why. Rustic yet cost-effective (and highly customizable), plywood can be used for cabinets and shelves.
- Stained glass – Your windows don’t have to be dull! Customized stained glass windows can create an artistic feel throughout your kitchen.
Maximize Your Layout
When redesigning your kitchen, you will want to consider a wide variety of layout options. From an open design with a kitchen island to a compact, minimalist design, the layout of your kitchen has a significant impact on functionality.
What to consider when designing your kitchen’s layout:
- Size of your kitchen – if you have a tiny kitchen, you will likely want to utilize as much vertical space as possible when considering where to put your kitchen storage.
- Use – if you are a savant in the kitchen and spend a good deal of your time coming up with new recipes, a compact design with minimal counter space will likely not serve you well.
- Current layout – consider your existing design. What works for you where it is? What doesn’t? Why do you think the previous owner or builder selected this layout?
- Lighting – many people prefer a kitchen with a lot of natural light. Consider adding windows to your new kitchen design.
Redesigning your kitchen can be an enjoyable project. However, kitchen remodel is not an undertaking to take lightly. The components of your kitchen (electrical, appliances, plumbing, etc.) can be expensive and difficult to repair if you don’t know what you are doing. Exercising caution and proper preparation when redesigning your new kitchen will keep you and your family happy for years to come!

Choosing A Custom Home Builder: 6 Important Factors to Consider
Choosing the right custom home builder for your project makes all the difference. A great builder can make a complicated project successful.
When you’re considering a choice between building companies list the assets each brings to the project.
#1 – Credentials and education
Business credentials indicate that an individual is suitable for undertaking a specific project. Industry associations such as the National Association of Home Builders or the National Association of the Remodeling industry. Although these credentials are great to have and are a needed factor when choosing the right home builder the real education comes in when the builder has experience working in the field and getting their hands dirty. It is common for home builders to be educated on paper but you want to trust the home builder to keep track of the projects and the vendors supplying the service in building the home. John Easterling of John Easterling Construction started in the field and has ran multiple companies including, carpentry, framing, trim, painting, and foundations prior to becoming a home builder. You can trust he will be on top of the project and making sure all subcontractors are accurate with their work on your new home.
#2 – Excellent Communication skills
The average new home construction takes about 6 months to complete after the two months of planning and financing. You want to make sure you can get along well and communicate well with the builder. The builder needs to keep you informed of the status of your project during the entire timeline Mutual respect and reasonable expectations of one another ensure success. You want to make sure you like the person you are working with. After all, you will be in a relationship with them for approximately 6-8 months.
#3 – Knowledge of the costs of construction
For a project to secure a building permit as required in the Building Department stamped architectural drawings must be submitted. Once the architect & builder provides these drawings subcontractors can submit their estimates, and the builder can assemble those costs and provide a range for the entire project cost.
#4 – Experience in Design Build
Design Build benefits the client because it stresses the collaborative and transparent nature of successful project management from the start. To be informed and up to date on costs of labor and of materials is critical in construction project management to better advise clients of choices during design. Design Build means that the architectural design and the construction are both managed by one entity, one single point of accountability. Choosing custom home builders like John Easterling Construction may help alleviate some of the uncertainty in construction scheduling since both design and build are handled by the same company.
#5 – Value and quality
Tour the homes built by any company you’re considering, and secure permission to talk with previous clients. Then have a frank discussion about…
– how many of their projects are completed on time. If they don’t give a clear answer, dig deeper to find out what their design process is like and how they build.
– Listen for clues. A strong, experienced builder will probably tell you exactly how they manage client expectations and ensure projects are on time and within budget.
– Trust your instincts. Quality custom home builders are interested in a satisfied customer at the end of the project. Find a builder who will tell you the truth, even when it is difficult to hear.
#6 – Reputation and Recommendations
Incredible builders have equally incredible reputations.
Good word of mouth makes or breaks any custom home industry professional, so look for custom home builders whose reputations precede them positively.
